The Modern Gemstone for April is: Bloodstone
Dark Green with red splashes of Red Jasper
About the Bloodstone:
A mainly dark green stone comprised of chalcedony and with strands or specks of red jasper running through it. Chalcedony originates from a combination of quartz and moganite and Jasper from iron oxide. The Bloodstone is semi translucent to opaque with a natural shine and luster. The gemstone can be found in a range of shapes and cuts, including round, oval, emerald and cabochon and set in either silver or gold.
The Bloodstone is also known as Heliotrope – a name which is derived from the Greek Helios and means the “Stone of the Sun”. The Red Jasper within the stone was believed by ancient civilisations to be symbolic of the rays of the sun setting over the sea.
